日本とアメリカのバレンタインデー Valentine’s Day in America and Japan

今日は2月14日で、いよいよバレンタインデーが来ました。今回、日本とアメリカのバレンタインの違いについて書きたいと思います。Today is February 14th which means its finally time for Valentine’s Day again.  This time I would like to write about some of the differences between Japan and America’s versions of Valentine’s Day.

アメリカのバレンタインデー American Valentine’s Day

バレンタインデー前、お店はバレンタインテーマの飾りをして、カード・チョコ・ぬいぐるみ・バラをたくさん並びます。小学生たちは現代アニメや映画のキャラに印刷してある、小さなカードをいっぱい買っています。なぜなら、学校でのバレンタイン交換パーティーがあるからです。男子はかっこいいキャラのカードを皆に一枚ずつ渡します。女子たちも先生たちもお互い様にバレンタインカードを皆に贈ります。歳をとったら、中学生・高校生はバレンタイン交換がだんだんと友達と付き合っている人の間に限ります。大人はだいたい恋人とロマンチックなデートにでも出かけて、おしゃれをして映画館や高級な料理を二人で過ごします。Before Valentine’s Day the stores decorate and begin selling tons of cards, chocolates, teddy bears and roses.  Elementary school kids buy cute little cards printed with characters from cartoons and movies.  They bring these to their Valentine’s parties at school.  Boys give tough looking character cards to everyone else in the class.  The girls and teachers also give Valentines to everyone.  As kids get older middle schoolers and high schoolers begin giving cards to only friends and significant others.  Adults like to go on romantic dates, dressing up and going to a movie or a nice restaurant.

日本のバレンタインデー Japanese Valentine’s Day

バレンタインデー商品はアメリカとほぼ変わらず、カード・チョコ・ぬいぐるみ・バラもあります。しかし、バレンタインカードやチョコを渡すのは女性だけです。相手によって贈るチョコの種類が変わります。本命チョコ・義理チョコ・友チョコ・ファミチョコもあります。Just like America Japanese stores sell the same cards, chocolate, teddy bears and roses.  However only women give Valentines on the 14th.  Depending on who it is the type of chocolate given changes.  There’s Love chocolate, Acquaintance Chocolate, Friend Chocolate and Family Chocolate (to name a few).

• 本命チョコ…愛情を告白するため愛を込めた手作りチョコ Love Chocolate-is given to confess feelings of love and is often handmade.
• 義理チョコ…知り合いや同僚に小さなチョコを渡すAquaintance Chocolate-is for everyone else.
• 友チョコ…友達のためのチョコ Friend Chocolate-for your friends.
• ファミチョコ…家族のためのチョコFamily Chocolate-for your family.

女性だけが渡せなければいけないとは平等じゃないと思う欧米人が結構います。でも！日本では女性の苦労のお返しに、ホワイトデーという祝いがあります。3月14日は男性が女性に渡す日なんです。Westerners tend to look at Japanese Valentine’s and think that its rather unequal because the men don’t do anything.  BUT! In Japan as a thank you to women there is a holiday called White day.  On March 14th men give women chocolate.

マイバレンタインデー My Valentine’s Day

昨日、私はバイトで客様がいない時、不要なペンキ色見本をハサミでハートを切って、絵美里の大好きなところを書きました。もちろん日本語・英語両方で書きました。「Your Eyes　君の目」のような可愛いことを書きました。それで、その16枚のハートを彼女が見つけるようにいろんなところに隠していた。今日、彼女が全て集めたら、バレンタインプレゼントをゲットした「彼女が懐かしいけん玉を！！！」。彼女は私のために美味しいパンケーキを作ってくれて、手作りカードも貰いました。郵送が遅かったせい、私のプレゼントはまだ届かないがワクワクして待ちしています！Yesterday, when there were no customers around I cup a bunch of hearts out of paint swatches and wrote things I love about Emilee on them.  Of course, I had to do this bilingually (Your Eyes　君の目 ). After that, I hid those 16 hearts in places for her to find throughout the day.  When she found them all I gave her a kendama game. She made me delicious pancakes and a beautiful card.  The mail was slow, so I don’t have my gift yet, but I am excited for it!
