I first started playing guitar seriously in college. At the time I had broken up with a girl I was about to propose to and was understandably crying my eyes out. I was lonely so I started attending a church she wasn’t attending. I was a Christian before that but I dived into the Bible to hard to help me forget her. I started “focusing on God”. I went to church, prayer circles, bible studies and began memorizing Bible verses. Also, I began practicing the guitar.
I stayed up late into the night practicing to be able to play church songs. The guitar I had was an old cheap guitar my mother gave me, it was acoustic with no pickups, making participation in a band rather difficult. At the end of my second year I went to Oregon in the summer, worked my butt off and bought a $500 Ibanez Acoustic-Electric guitar. I quickly doubled my practice and set my sights on joining the church band.
When I finally joined a band it was playing solos on the trombone. Since I was a member I was asked to play guitar and sing when the leader had to be absent. After the leader graduated I played lead more and more. Even though my major was in Music Education and I should’ve been focusing on the trombone I put it off and had fun with guitar instead. Predictably I graduated a year late. First thing I did was quit trombone and kept up playing the guitar.
You probably already know this if you read my blog, but after graduation my interests shifted from music to Japanese. I did try to do some songwriting in Oregon for a while but I eventually started playing less and less. It seems that there is only room in my heart for one interest at a time. I did, however, bring my guitar all the way to Japan. However when I was preparing to return to America I considered selling it in Nagano City. I tried but they only wanted to offer me $5, which made me angry. I couldn’t just sell something that had been so precious to me for so little…so instead of making money, I spent money mailing it home.
I didn’t totally quit the guitar like I did the trombone, you can hear me play horribly on my Youtube channel.
